A profile of the Air Transport Auxiliary, the civilian organisation that delivered more than 300,000 planes to key locations during the Second World War.A tribute to the forgotten men and women of the Second World War: the ATA. The civilian staff of the Air Transport Auxiliary aided the war effort by delivering 309,000 planes to key destinations. But there were many dangers for the “Ancient and Tattered Airmen”, as they were nicknamed. We hear tales of bad weather, mechanical failure, burst tyres and both enemy and friendly fire. Although it’s a straightforward film, this has the benefit of being history that is told – with great wisdom – by the people who were there.
