An essential element of waging war, is the education of the troops, the quality of the various weapons and the ideology and moral of an army. Every unit in the field army had a smaller spare unit as a reserve. Thus an infantry regiment, had an infantry battalion as a spare unit. The battalion trained the new-drawn soldiers carefully and transferred them when required from the reserves to active duty. This system worked just fine, until extra materials and reserve troops finally ran out. This film shows a cross section of the divisions from the German Wehrmacht, during 1939 till 1945.

Antitank gunners were a military novelty at the beginning of the Second World War. They originated on account of the experiences during the First World War in which the allies with her new developed tanks had decided the military outcome. To be armed for future conflicts, the Wehrmacht created specially qualified units, the so-called antitank gunners. At first equipped with 3.7 cms paks, which were later substituted, because of stronger armour plating of enemy tanks during the course of the war, with heavy 7.5 and 8.8 cms guns. One of them, major Wilhelm Emmerling, filmed spectacular scenes on the west-front and east- front during operations, until his antitank-gunner regiment nr.126 got dissolved and became part of Heeresgruppe Kurland, by the end of the war.

At the break of dawn 22nd June, 1941 an immense wall of fire sweeps over the Soviet border. More than three million German soldiers begin with operation "Barbarossa". At the beginning of September 1941, Army group North fought their way through to Leningrad and cut off the city from all sides. Hitler wants to besiege the city and starve its people. A mistake, because only in autumn, 1941 Army Group North is strong enough to conquer the city. Instead, Hitler orders his divisions to go pass Leningrad and to venture North-East towards the Wolchow and join with the Finns. The 220 kilometer long Wolchow is of strategical importance. From its source in the north of the Ilmen lakes to Sjasstroi, where it flows into Lake Ladoga. With a width from up to 600 meters and its marshy, unclear riparian zones it forms an ideal natural defensive zone. Who controls the Wolchow, has the better military initial position. Stalin knows that aswell: To prevent the Germans of getting access to the Wolchow, his pioneers establish a deeply graded position system in the approaches to the river, since weeks.

Amateur films show everyday life during the war how it really was. Mission for Mussolini primarily revolves around the personal task Mussolini assigned to military war correspondent to CORRIERE DELLA SERRA Teniente Luigi Romersa to determine the factual basis for Hitler's reassurances of Nazi super-weapons, to include a bomb of devastating power. In pursuit of this, Romersa, armed with letters from the Duce himself, was allowed by Hitler to go to the top secret weapon development and test centers, off limits to even most German generals.These reportedly included witnessing of a German atomic test on the island of Rugen, for which radiologic evidence exists even today. Further, evidence is shown of a second test at Ohrdruf, and the surviving eyewitness is interviewed on camera. Also presented are chilling statements from KZ survivors who participated in the horrific cleanup of this live test on some 500 Russian POWs.
